Recharging from the USA takes a few minutes. You enter the Nigerian mobile number, the operator is detected from that number, you pick a plan, and you pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. There is no app to install and no account with a Nigerian bank is needed.
The number you are topping up must be a Nigerian mobile number. Nigerian numbers use the country code 234. The operator list covers MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9Mobile, including their data plans.
The plans cover a wide range of data needs, from small weekly bundles to large monthly packages. Glo, Airtel, MTN and 9Mobile all appear in the list, and validity runs from 7 days to 30 days depending on the plan you choose.
Smaller plans suit a short top-up. Airtel Nigeria Data offers 2GB Data for 1500 NGN with 30 days validity, and Glo Nigeria Data offers a 6GB Special Data Plan for 1500 NGN over 7 days. Glo also lists a 6.25GB Data Plan for 2000 NGN over 30 days.
Mid range plans give more room. Airtel Nigeria Data has an 8.5GB Weekly Plan for 3000 NGN over 7 days, 9Mobile Nigeria Data has 15GB Data for 3000 NGN over 30 days, and MTN Nigeria Data has 7GB Data for 3500 NGN over 7 days. Larger options include 9Mobile Nigeria Data with 18.5GB (15GB plus 3.5GB night) for 4000 NGN, Airtel Nigeria Data with 10GB Monthly Plan for 4000 NGN, and MTN Nigeria Data with 10GB plus 10mins Monthly Data Plan for 4500 NGN. The biggest listed bundles are 9Mobile Nigeria Data 22GB Data for 5000 NGN and Glo Nigeria Data 17GB Data Plan for 5000 NGN, both over 30 days.
A top-up keeps a Nigerian number in use when the person holding it is family back home or you are keeping the line for calls, bank alerts and messages. Regular data top-ups keep the line working between trips and let relatives stay reachable on a number they already know.
Many people in the USA keep a Nigerian line for bank codes, messages from services at home and calls with family. Sending a data bundle or airtime from the USA means the line stays in use without anyone needing a local card.
If you send to a relative, the plan lands on their number and they use it as normal. If the line is your own, you can top it up from the USA before travel so it is ready when you arrive.
Nigerian mobile numbers have 10 digits after the country code, and the leading zero is dropped when you write the number in international form. A national number like 0802 123 4567 becomes +234 802 123 4567. Enter it in that form so the top-up reaches the right line.
The country code for Nigeria is 234. If you copy a number from a contact card, remove the first zero and keep the remaining 10 digits. Check the operator shown before you pay, because the operator is detected from the number you enter.
A number typed with the wrong digits can send the top-up to another line. Read the number back once before you confirm.
You pay in US dollars with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Prices start from $3.17, and the plan value is shown in Naira as the amount that lands on the number. Where a plan is taxed by the operator, the amount shown is what arrives after that tax.
The plan list shows what the recipient receives in Naira, for example 1500 NGN, 3000 NGN or 5000 NGN, so you can see the value before paying. The dollar price you see at checkout is the price for that plan.
Payment is taken when you confirm the order, and the top-up is sent to the number you entered. Check the number and plan on the confirmation screen before you pay.
Enter the Nigerian mobile number, check the operator detected from it, choose a plan and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The top-up goes straight to the number. Prices start from $3.17 and there are 48 plans to choose from.
