Questions

How do I check if my phone has an eSIM?

Dial *#06# on the phone. If the screen shows an EID (a 32-digit number) alongside the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM. On iPhone, Settings → General → About also lists the EID. On Android, Settings → About phone → SIM status (or IMEI information) shows it.

My phone has an eSIM. Does it also need to be unlocked?

Yes. A phone locked to a carrier cannot use another network's eSIM, including a travel eSIM. Check with the carrier that sold the phone; in the UK, phones sold since December 2021 are unlocked by law.

Why does my model show eSIM online but not on my phone?

The same model name can be sold in versions with and without eSIM. iPhones from mainland China never have it; some Hong Kong and Macau iPhones (XS to 12) do not; some US carrier Samsung models have it disabled; Chinese-market Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and Honor units have no eSIM. The *#06# check is the only reliable test.

Can a dual-SIM phone use a physical SIM and an eSIM at the same time?

Yes, that is the normal set-up for travel: your home SIM stays in for calls and bank codes, the travel eSIM handles data. Turn off data roaming on the home SIM so it does not get used by mistake.
