PDP Authentication Failure: What It Means and How to Fix It

Last checked: September 2026

PDP authentication failure means your phone cannot set up a mobile data connection with the network. PDP stands for Packet Data Protocol. It is mostly seen on Android phones. Common causes include wrong APN settings, an inactive plan or line, data roaming switched off, or a temporary network fault.

What PDP authentication failure means

PDP authentication failure means your phone cannot set up a mobile data connection with the network. PDP stands for Packet Data Protocol. The error appears when the phone tries to start a data session and the network rejects it. It is mostly seen on Android phones. You may see it as a notification or in your connection settings.

When this happens, mobile data will not work. Calls and texts may still work because they use a different part of the network. The error is about data only. It can appear after you change SIM or eSIM, travel abroad, or when there is a temporary network fault.

The message is a signal that something in the chain between your phone and the network is not set up correctly. That chain includes your APN settings, your line status, and whether data roaming is allowed on the line you are using.

Most common causes

The most common causes are wrong APN settings, the plan or line not active yet, data roaming switched off on the line in use, and a temporary network fault. Less often, a phone setting or a network issue in your area can be the reason.

APN settings tell your phone how to connect to the mobile data network. If they are wrong or missing, the data session cannot start. This is a common cause after changing provider or installing a new eSIM.

Your plan or line may not be active yet. If you have just bought a plan or installed an eSIM, it can take a short time to activate. Until it is active, the network will reject data sessions.

Data roaming must be on for the line you are using when you are abroad. If you are using a travel eSIM, the eSIM connects to local networks as a roaming line, so data roaming must be on for that eSIM line.

A temporary network fault can also cause the error. This is usually fixed by waiting or by toggling airplane mode.

Fixes to try in order

Try these fixes in order, from the simplest to the most involved. Start with airplane mode and a restart. Then check your line settings and APN. Reset network settings only as a last step, because it also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords.

  1. Turn airplane mode on and then off. This forces your phone to reconnect to the network.
  2. Restart your phone. A restart can clear temporary connection problems.
  3. Check that mobile data is on for the correct line. If you have more than one SIM or eSIM, make sure the right line is selected for data.
  4. If you are abroad, turn on data roaming for that line. For a travel eSIM, this is required because the eSIM connects to local networks as a roaming line.
  5. Check that the APN matches your provider's instructions. Menu names vary by phone maker, so look for Mobile Network, Access Point Names, or similar in your settings.
  6. As a last step, reset network settings. This also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, so you will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi afterwards.

After each step, test your mobile data. If it works, you can stop.

If it happens on a travel eSIM

On a travel eSIM, data roaming must be on for the eSIM line because the eSIM connects to local networks as a roaming line. If data roaming is off for that line, you will see a PDP authentication failure and no data.

When you install a travel eSIM, make sure it is set as the line for mobile data. Then turn on data roaming for that eSIM line. This is different from your home SIM, where you might keep data roaming off to avoid charges.

If you have just installed the eSIM, check that the plan is active. Activation can take a short time. If you are not sure how to install an eSIM, see our eSIM installation guide.

Also check the APN. Your eSIM provider will give you the correct APN settings. If the APN is wrong, the data session will fail even if roaming is on.

When to contact support

Contact support if you have tried all the fixes and still see PDP authentication failure. Also contact support if your plan or line should be active but data still does not work, or if you are unsure about the correct APN settings.

Before you contact support, note down what you have tried and any error messages you see. This will help them help you faster.

If you are a Slashtel customer, you can reach us through our help centre. We can check your plan status and confirm the correct APN settings for your eSIM.

If you are not a Slashtel customer, contact your mobile provider. They can check if there is a network fault in your area or if your line needs to be reactivated.

Questions, answered

What does PDP authentication failure mean?

PDP authentication failure means your phone cannot set up a mobile data connection with the network. PDP stands for Packet Data Protocol. It is mostly seen on Android phones. The error appears when the phone tries to start a data session and the network rejects it.

How do I fix PDP authentication failure on Android?

Try these fixes in order: turn airplane mode on and off, restart your phone, check mobile data is on for the correct line, turn on data roaming for that line when abroad, check the APN matches your provider's instructions, and reset network settings as a last step.

Why does PDP authentication failure happen on a travel eSIM?

On a travel eSIM, data roaming must be on for the eSIM line because the eSIM connects to local networks as a roaming line. If data roaming is off for that line, you will see a PDP authentication failure and no data.

Does resetting network settings remove Wi-Fi passwords?

Yes, resetting network settings also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi afterwards. Only do this as a last step after trying other fixes.

When should I contact support for PDP authentication failure?

Contact support if you have tried all the fixes and still see the error. Also contact support if your plan or line should be active but data still does not work, or if you are unsure about the correct APN settings.
