Airtel sells a single roaming pack family in five sizes. The 1 day pack carries 1GB of data and 100 call minutes. The 5 day pack carries 2GB and 150 minutes. The 10 day pack carries 3GB and 200 minutes. The 30 day pack carries 10GB and 300 minutes, and adds in-flight use of 250MB, 100 outgoing call minutes and 100 outgoing SMS. The 365 day pack carries 7GB and 100 minutes, and its India element gives 2.5GB per day, unlimited calls and 100 SMS per day. Airtel also offers one roaming plan that covers travel to 189 countries, so a customer does not need separate packs per country or for transit airports. Four postpaid packs sit alongside the standard range.
International roaming is off by default on Airtel. Buying a roaming pack switches it on automatically. Packs are bought on the Airtel website or in the Airtel App. Postpaid customers can buy up to 365 days before travel and prepaid customers up to 30 days before. Validity begins only when the phone connects to a covered network abroad and makes its first chargeable use. Postpaid customers can set auto-renewal in the Airtel App; prepaid packs do not renew automatically.
When a postpaid customer uses all of a pack's high-speed data, speed drops to 80 kbps. When a prepaid customer uses all pack data, data is blocked until a data top-up is bought. Airtel texts postpaid customers at 50%, 90% and 100% of data used, and prepaid customers at 50%, 80% and 100%. In countries where Airtel roaming packs are not sold, data is barred; calls and SMS work at standard rates and incoming SMS is free. From 8 October 2026, Airtel postpaid plans include one free international roaming trip per SIM each year: a 5 day pack with 5GB of data, activated when the customer chooses.
A data-only eSIM has no phone number. Slashtel sells prepaid data-only travel eSIMs for 190+ countries, and the eSIM connects to local networks with automatic network selection. The Airtel SIM stays in the phone for calls, texts and bank codes while the eSIM carries mobile data. The eSIM is installed by QR code before the trip and switched on when you land. For any trip where you want to keep the Airtel number live for incoming calls and one-time codes, this splits the two jobs. Check the table on this page for the destinations where the eSIM costs less than the Airtel pack. See also roaming from India.
