Who goes and why

You're flying into Lisbon for a long weekend, or heading to the Algarve for two weeks of sun. Maybe you're a digital nomad setting up in Porto for a month. Either way, you need data the moment you land — not after you find a Wi-Fi password and queue at a shop.

If you're coming from the UK, your home network will happily charge you per day for roaming. If you're India-origin and keeping an Indian SIM for bank OTPs, you need a separate data line anyway. A Portugal eSIM solves both: one QR code, data on arrival, no physical SIM swap.

How much data for this trip

Match your data to your habits, not your trip length.

Trip Usage Plan
3 days, city break Maps, WhatsApp, no video 5GB
7 days, mixed travel Maps, WhatsApp video, some streaming 5GB
14 days, remote work All of the above plus hotspot 10GB
30 days, nomad Heavy use, daily video calls 20GB+

Maps eat about 5MB per 10 minutes of navigation. WhatsApp video calls use roughly 25MB per minute. Streaming Netflix in HD is 3GB per hour. If you're unsure, go one size up — unused data is better than topping up mid-trip.

Two practical local notes

Lisbon Airport (LIS) has free Wi-Fi, but it's slow and asks for an email. Install your eSIM before you fly; data starts on first connection. You'll be on a Portuguese network within seconds of landing, no passport or payment needed at a kiosk.

Hotspot works fine. Portuguese networks don't block tethering. If you're a digital nomad, your Portugal eSIM can power your laptop. And if you're India-origin, keep your Indian SIM active for OTPs — your eSIM handles data, your Indian SIM handles verification codes.

Install before you fly

You'll get a QR code by email within a minute of purchase. Install it on Wi-Fi before you leave — airport Wi-Fi is fine, but home broadband is faster. Data starts when you connect in Portugal, not before. Full instructions are in our install guide.

What competitors miss

Most Portugal eSIM guides are generic tourist copy: "Lisbon's hills, Porto's wine, beautiful beaches." Ours is written for you — the UK resident tired of roaming fees, or the India-origin traveller juggling two SIMs. We also connect the dots: if you're keeping an Indian SIM alive for OTPs, recharge it from abroad while you're at it. One account, both problems solved.

Questions, answered

Will a Portugal eSIM work on my phone?

If your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM (iPhone XS or newer, most recent Android flagships), yes. Check our compatibility guide before buying. The eSIM installs as a QR code and activates when you connect to a Portuguese network.

How much data do I need for a week in Portugal?

For a 7-day trip with maps, WhatsApp, and occasional social media, 5GB is comfortable. If you plan to stream video or work remotely, go for 10GB. You can always top up, but buying a bigger plan upfront is cheaper.

Can I keep my UK SIM in for calls and texts?

Yes. Your UK SIM stays active for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data. Watch out for roaming charges on your UK plan — check with your provider before you leave. For India-origin travellers, keep your Indian SIM for OTPs.

Is a Portugal eSIM cheaper than UK roaming?

Usually, yes. UK roaming add-ons from major networks cost roughly £5-6 per day. Our Portugal eSIM plans start from $X.XX for 5GB over 30 days. No daily fees, no surprise bills.

What happens if my flight is delayed and I arrive late?

Nothing. Your eSIM data starts on first connection at a Portuguese network, not at a set time. If you don't use it, you don't lose it. Unused eSIMs are refunded on request.

Can I use a Portugal eSIM for hotspot tethering?

Yes. You can share your data connection with a laptop or tablet. Useful for digital nomads working from cafes in Lisbon or co-working spaces in the Algarve.
