How to top up a MTN number from abroad

Slashtel sends an MTN Ghana top-up straight to the number, paid by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and it usually lands within minutes. You do not need an account with MTN or a Ghanaian bank card. The operator is detected from the number you enter, so the right top-up is applied automatically.

  1. Enter the Ghanaian mobile number you want to top up, using the country code 233 and dropping the leading zero.
  2. Choose the top-up amount you want to send.
  3. Pay with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  4. Wait for the confirmation that the top-up has been delivered to the number.

The person receiving the top-up does not need to do anything. The airtime or data is added to their MTN balance and they can use it as normal.

If you are topping up your own Ghanaian number while you are away, the same steps apply. Keep your home SIM in your phone for calls and bank OTPs, and use the MTN line for local data and calls in Ghana.

The plans and what lands on the phone

MTN Ghana top-ups come in two forms: airtime, which is added to the balance in Ghanaian cedi, and data bundles, which are added to the data balance. The amount shown is what lands on the phone after the operator's tax, so there is no separate deduction to work out.

Airtime top-ups are available in several amounts, including 64.13 GHS, 128 GHS, 192 GHS, 257 GHS and 385 GHS. These are added to the MTN balance and can be used for calls, data or other services on the line.

Data bundles cover social media, video and general mobile data. Examples include 70.87MB Social Media, 35.57MB, 135.69MB Video Mobile Data, 349MB, 678.43 MB Video Mobile Data, 350MB Social Media, 1.33GB Video Mobile Data and 92.88 GB. Each bundle is added to the data balance for the MTN line.

Because the operator is detected from the number, you do not need to choose a network by hand. The available plans appear once the number is entered.

Entering the number correctly

Ghanaian mobile numbers use the country code 233 and 9 digits after it. The leading zero in the national format is dropped when you write the number in international form. For example, the national number 023 123 4567 becomes +233 23 123 4567.

If you are used to writing the number with a leading zero, remove it before adding the country code. A number written as 023 123 4567 should be entered as 233 23 123 4567. The plus sign is optional in most entry fields.

Check the number carefully before paying. A top-up sent to the wrong number cannot be recalled, and the operator will not reverse it. If you are unsure, ask the person to confirm their number in international format.

MTN is one of the main mobile operators in Ghana, alongside Telecel and AirtelTigo. Make sure the number you are topping up is an MTN line, since a top-up for another operator will not land on an MTN number.

If a top-up does not go through

Most top-ups arrive within minutes, but a delay can happen if the number is entered incorrectly or if the operator is busy. If the top-up has not arrived after a short wait, check the number you entered and the confirmation you received before trying again.

If the number was wrong, the top-up may have been delivered to a different line. In that case, contact support with the details of the order. If the number was correct and the top-up still has not arrived, it may be queued on the operator side and can land shortly after.

Do not send a second top-up to the same number until you have checked the first one. A duplicate top-up will be delivered as a separate amount and cannot be cancelled once it has been sent.

If you paid but the order failed, the payment is normally reversed. Keep the confirmation email or receipt so support can trace the order quickly.

Paying safely

Payment is taken by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay at the time of the order. Slashtel does not store your full card details, and the top-up is sent to the number you entered once the payment is confirmed.

Use a payment method in your own name and check the order summary before confirming. The amount shown is the amount that lands on the phone, so there is no extra operator tax to add on top.

If you are topping up for someone else, make sure you have their correct number in international format. The top-up is delivered to the number, not to an account, so the person receiving it does not need to share any login details with you.

Keep the confirmation for your records. It shows the number, the amount and the time of the order, which is useful if you need to check anything later.
