How to top up a MTN number from abroad

You can recharge an MTN Cameroon number from anywhere by entering the 9-digit mobile number on Slashtel, choosing a recharge amount and paying by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The operator is detected from the number, and the credit is delivered to the phone in minutes. No local SIM or bank account in Cameroon is needed.

MTN is one of the two main mobile operators in Cameroon, alongside Orange. If the number you want to recharge belongs to MTN, the top-up goes straight to that line. You do not need to know the recipient's account details beyond the mobile number itself.

Here is the step by step process:

1. Open the Slashtel top-up page for Cameroon and select MTN.
2. Enter the Cameroonian mobile number in national or international format.
3. Check that the detected operator shows MTN.
4. Choose one of the recharge amounts, from FCFA 302 up to FCFA 20,000.
5. Pay with a bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
6. Wait for the confirmation that the recharge has been delivered to the number.

The whole process takes a few minutes, and the recipient does not have to do anything to receive the credit.

The plans and what lands on the phone

Slashtel sells direct MTN Cameroon recharges in fixed amounts. The amount shown is the amount that lands on the phone, with no deduction for operator tax on these plans. Available recharges are FCFA 302, FCFA 1,000, FCFA 2,502, FCFA 3,999, FCFA 4,999, FCFA 7,998, FCFA 9,997 and FCFA 20,000.

Each recharge is a straight credit top-up rather than a bundle with a fixed validity period. The recipient can use the balance for calls, SMS or mobile data according to their own MTN Cameroon tariff. Because these are standard recharges, there is no separate validity window attached by Slashtel.

The amounts are set in CFA francs, the currency used in Cameroon. When you pay, the price is shown in your own currency at checkout, with the from-price starting at $2.75. The exact amount charged depends on the recharge you select.

If a plan were subject to an operator tax, the amount displayed would be the amount that lands after that tax is taken. For the MTN Cameroon recharges listed here, the receive amount matches the recharge label, so FCFA 1,000 sent means FCFA 1,000 received.

Entering the number correctly

Cameroon uses the country code 237, and MTN mobile numbers have 9 digits starting with 6, for example 6 71 23 45 67. In international format this is written +237 6 71 23 45 67. There is no leading zero to drop, so keep the number exactly as it is and add the country code only if you are using the international form.

Getting the number right is the main thing that prevents a failed top-up. If you are given the number in local form, such as 6 71 23 45 67, you can enter it as it is. If you prefer the international form, add +237 in front: +237 6 71 23 45 67.

Do not add a zero before the 6. Cameroonian mobile numbers do not use a leading zero in the way some other countries do, so adding one would create an invalid number. Double-check the nine digits before paying, because a recharge sent to a wrong number cannot be recalled.

If you are unsure whether the number is MTN or Orange, the operator detection on the page will tell you once you have entered it. Orange is the other main operator in the country, and it is handled separately.

If a top-up does not go through

Most top-ups are delivered in minutes. If a recharge does not arrive, first check that the number was entered correctly and that it is an MTN line. If the number is right and the credit still has not landed, contact Slashtel support with the order details so the delivery can be checked with the operator.

A delay can happen for a few reasons. The most common is a mistyped digit, which sends the recharge to a different number or causes it to be rejected. Another is a temporary issue on the operator side, which usually resolves itself.

If the payment went through but the credit has not appeared after a reasonable wait, keep the confirmation you received. Support can use the order reference to trace what happened and arrange a correction if the recharge failed.

It also helps to confirm with the recipient that their line is active and able to receive a top-up. A suspended or inactive MTN line may not accept a recharge until it is restored.

Paying safely

Payment on Slashtel is made by bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the checkout is encrypted. You do not need to share any banking details with the recipient, and the person receiving the recharge does not need an account or a card. The price you see at checkout is the price you pay, starting from $2.75.

Paying by card or mobile wallet keeps the transaction between you and the payment provider. The recipient only sees the credit arrive on their phone. This is useful when you are sending support to family or friends in Cameroon and do not want to pass money through other channels.

Before confirming, check the number, the operator and the recharge amount on the summary screen. Once the payment is complete, the top-up is processed automatically and delivered to the MTN number.
