Cherry blossom season in Japan 2027 is expected from late March to mid April, opening in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka before the bloom front moves north. Visitors plan around the Japan Meteorological Agency's normal dates and the daily forecasts that track the front. A data only eSIM keeps maps, forecasts and train apps working while the home SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank codes.
When the cherry blossom comes in 2027
The 2027 bloom is expected between late March and mid April, with Tokyo flowering first of the three cities and Kyoto and Osaka following within days. All 2027 dates are estimates until the official forecasts are published.
The Japan Meteorological Agency's normal first flowering dates, based on 1991 to 2020 averages, are 24 March for Tokyo, 26 March for Kyoto and 27 March for Osaka. Normal full bloom dates are 31 March for Tokyo and 4 April for both Kyoto and Osaka.
These are averages, not promises. The season starts in Kyushu in March and the bloom front moves north, so a trip in the first half of April usually catches at least one of the three cities near full bloom. Build a few days of slack into an itinerary if blossom is the main reason for the trip, and check the official forecast pages again in the weeks before departure.
How the bloom forecasts work
Forecasts combine the designated specimen trees, weather records and spring temperature patterns, and they are updated through the season. The Japan Meteorological Agency records flowering on set trees and updates its status pages three times a day from December to June.
Two sources matter for planning:
- The Japan Meteorological Agency publishes normal dates and status pages for the whole country, updated three times a day from December to June.
- The Japan National Tourism Organization's cherry blossom page carries a forecast supplied by the Japan Weather Association (tenki.jp).
Forecasts move with the weather, so treat any date more than a couple of weeks out as provisional. The JNTO page also tracks the front as it moves north from Kyushu, which helps if travel dates are fixed and the cities are not.
Tokyo viewing spots
Tokyo has several free or low cost hanami areas within easy reach of central stations. Ueno Park, Chidorigafuchi, Shinjuku Gyoen and the Meguro River cover very different styles of viewing.
- Ueno Park: hosts the Ueno Sakura Matsuri, with about 800 Somei Yoshino trees and a path lit by hanging lanterns.
- Chidorigafuchi: a walkway of about 700 metres along the Imperial Palace moat, with boat rides available.
- Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden: about 900 cherry trees, a short walk from Shinjuku Station; alcohol is not allowed.
- Meguro River: about 800 trees along a 3.8 km stretch, with lanterns lit at night around Nakameguro.
Weekday mornings are quieter at all four. Check opening hours and any entry rules on the official garden or park site before going, as arrangements in blossom season can change.
Kyoto viewing spots
Kyoto's blossom peaks in early April, and its best known spots are a park, a canal walk and a riverside district. Crowds are heavy in the season, so early starts help.
- Maruyama Park: next to Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto's oldest park, peaking in early April, with a famous weeping cherry lit at night.
- Philosopher's Path: a canal side walk of about two kilometres near Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji, lined with around 400 cherry trees.
- Arashiyama: listed as a cherry blossom area in Kyoto's official guide, which advises arriving early because of heavy crowds.
Kyoto has designated tourist areas where littering can lead to a fine under a city ordinance, so carry rubbish out with you. Confirm night viewing times and any charges on the official city or venue pages.
Osaka viewing spots
Osaka pairs castle grounds with riverside and park viewing, and one of its parks is on the national Top 100 list. Night viewing is a feature at the castle.
- Nishinomaru Garden, Osaka Castle Park: about 300 cherry trees, mostly Somei Yoshino, with night viewing in the blossom season.
- Expo '70 Commemorative Park, Suita: one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, about a five minute walk from Bampaku-Kinen-Koen Station on the Osaka Monorail.
- Kema Sakuranomiya Park: listed by Osaka's official tourism site as a well known cherry blossom spot.
Osaka is an easy base for day trips to Kyoto and Nara, and the castle area is walkable from central hotels. Check night viewing dates and any garden entry fee on the official park site.
Getting around: IC cards and trains
IC cards cover trains, buses and many small purchases nationwide, and the Tokaido Shinkansen links the three cities quickly. Buy a card on arrival and reserve shinkansen seats ahead in blossom season.
IC cards such as Suica and PASMO can be used nationwide for trains and buses and at some shops, vending machines and taxis. Welcome Suica and TOURIST PASMO are visitor cards sold without a deposit.
The Tokaido Shinkansen links Tokyo with Shin-Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, and the fastest trains take about two hours and 20 minutes from Tokyo Station to Kyoto. The Japan Rail Pass does not cover Nozomi trains unless the holder buys a separate special ticket.
From Haneda Airport (HND), the Keikyu Line reaches Shinagawa and the Tokyo Monorail reaches Hamamatsucho, each in about 20 minutes. The JR Haruka express from Kansai International Airport (KIX) takes about 50 minutes to Shin-Osaka and about 75 minutes to Kyoto.
Arrival: Visit Japan Web
Visit Japan Web lets travellers complete immigration and customs arrival procedures online before landing, and it also covers tax free shopping. Set it up before departure and keep the QR codes available offline.
Visit Japan Web is a Digital Agency service. Register your details, add your trip, and complete the arrival procedures for immigration and customs, then show the codes at the airport. The same service covers tax free shopping procedures.
Visa and entry requirements depend on your nationality and are not decided here. Use the official Japanese government site to confirm what applies to your passport before booking. Screenshot the codes in case airport wifi is slow, and keep your passport to hand.
Where to stay
Choose a district by transport rather than by property: central Tokyo for rail links, central Kyoto for temples and the station, and Osaka's castle and station areas for night viewing and day trips.
- Tokyo: Ueno and Asakusa for park side viewing and good value; Shinjuku for the garden and west side transport; Nakameguro for the river; Tokyo Station and Shinagawa for shinkansen departures.
- Kyoto: around Kyoto Station for rail and the Haruka express; Higashiyama for the Philosopher's Path and Maruyama Park; Arashiyama for early riverside viewing.
- Osaka: Osaka Castle Park for night viewing; Umeda and Shin-Osaka for rail links; Namba for food and nightlife.
Book well ahead for late March and early April, when demand is high across all three cities. Confirm exact addresses and access on the property's own site.
Staying connected in Japan
A data only eSIM covers maps, forecasts and train apps, while the home SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank codes. Buy and install before flying, since validity starts on first connection in Japan.
Slashtel eSIMs for Japan are data only: no local phone number and no calls or SMS, though WhatsApp and other internet calls work over the data. Keep the home SIM in the phone for calls and bank codes, and turn off data roaming on it to avoid roaming charges.
The eSIM is bought online with an email address and a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the QR code arrives by email within minutes. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects at the destination, so it can be bought and installed at home before the trip. The network is chosen automatically for the best signal and cannot be picked by hand. Hotspot and tethering are allowed, and more data can be added to the same eSIM later with no new QR code. The phone must be unlocked and eSIM compatible.
Japan plans come in 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 GB with 7, 15 or 30 days validity, from $2.29. See the Japan destination page and the Tokyo eSIM page, check compatibility, follow the installation guide, read about calls, texts and OTPs, compare a Japan SIM card for tourists and the Japan eSIM guide, or size a plan with the data calculator. Support is on WhatsApp and email.
