Japan SIM Card: Local SIM vs Travel eSIM for Tourists
Last checked: October 2026
A japan sim card comes in two main forms. A local SIM gives you a Japanese phone number and calls, but voice cards need identity checks and data-only cards will soon need them too. A Slashtel travel eSIM is data-only, bought online, with no passport check and no shop visit.
What you need for a Japan SIM card
Japanese voice SIM cards, the ones with a Japanese phone number, have required identity checks since 2006 and are generally aimed at residents rather than visitors. Data-only tourist SIM cards are currently sold without an ID check at airports, electronics shops and online. That is changing: an amendment to the Mobile Phone Improper Use Prevention Act, promulgated on 29 May 2026, extends identity checks to data-only SIM cards. It takes effect within one year, by 29 May 2027 at the latest, and short-stay visitors will verify with their passport. If you want a local SIM, expect to show your passport at some point, and plan for that check to become standard.
Where tourists buy a local SIM
You can buy a local SIM at Japanese airports, in electronics shops and online. Airport counters are convenient if you land and want a card straight away, though queues after a long flight are common. Electronics shops in cities work if you are staying a while and want to ask questions in person. Buying online before you fly is possible too, but delivery and activation timing need checking against your arrival date. None of these routes removes the identity check for voice cards, and the data-only exemption is time limited.
Local SIM or travel eSIM: which suits which trip
A local SIM suits you if you need a Japanese phone number for calls, bookings or local services, and you are happy to show your passport and visit a counter or shop. A travel eSIM suits you if you mainly need data for maps, messages and browsing, and you would rather sort it out before you leave the UK. The Slashtel eSIM is data only: no local phone number, and calls and messages work over data apps such as WhatsApp. In exchange, you buy it online with an email address and card payment, with no passport check and no shop visit. Neither option is better in every case. If a local number matters, take the local SIM. If it does not, the eSIM saves you the airport detour.
Buying and installing an eSIM before you fly
Buy the eSIM online, and the QR code arrives by email within minutes of payment. No account is needed. Install it before you fly: our guide on how to install an eSIM on iPhone and Android walks through it. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects at the destination, so installing early costs you nothing. Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM compatible first, using our compatibility guide. Keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank OTP texts, and turn off data roaming on the home SIM to avoid charges. The eSIM runs alongside it, so nothing is swapped out. The network is chosen automatically for the best signal and cannot be picked by hand. Hotspot and tethering are allowed. You can buy your Japan eSIM in a few minutes.
How much data to get
Pick data by trip length and how much you stream. Options run from 1GB to 50GB, with validity of 7, 15 or 30 days. Rough guide:
- 1GB: $2.29. A short break with light map and message use.
- 3GB: $4.69. A week of maps, messages and occasional browsing.
- 5GB: $5.39. A week or two with photos, social media and some video.
- 10GB: $9.39. Two weeks of regular use, including video.
- 20GB: $18.29. A longer trip or heavy social media and streaming.
- 50GB: $29.59. A month of heavy use, or tethering a laptop.
If you run low, more data can be added to the same eSIM later, with no new QR code. For a wider comparison, see our eSIM for Japan guide.
Calls, WhatsApp and bank texts
The eSIM is data only, so there is no local phone number. Calls and messages go over data apps such as WhatsApp, which is fine for most travellers. Your UK bank OTP texts still arrive on your home SIM, which stays in the phone, so keep that SIM active for receiving them and switch off its data roaming. If you need to make ordinary phone calls to Japanese numbers, a local voice SIM is the better fit. Our guide on calls, texts, OTPs and data eSIMs explains the split, and eSIM vs physical SIM covers the hardware side.
