At sea versus in port: the routine that avoids a satellite bill
Before sailingInstall the eSIM on Wi-Fi at home. Turn off mobile data and data roaming on your home SIM for the whole trip; keep it on for calls and SMS only.
Leaving portSwitch the eSIM line off (Settings, Mobile Data, the eSIM line, off). Do this as the ship pulls out, not when you notice the bars fade.
At seaAirplane mode plus Wi-Fi is the safe setting. The ship's cellular network (often shown as Cellular at Sea or a maritime carrier) bills your home SIM at satellite roaming rates.
Arriving in portWhen you can see the terminal, turn the eSIM line back on and set it as the data line. Maps, ride apps and messaging run on local data at the plan price.

Questions

Does an eSIM work on a cruise ship?

In port and within a few kilometres of the coast it works exactly like on land, using the local network. At sea there is no land network; the ship's own cellular system bills your home SIM at satellite rates, so the eSIM line should be off between ports and ship Wi-Fi used instead.

Is an eSIM cheaper than the ship Wi-Fi package?

For port days, by a wide margin: a 5GB plan for a whole itinerary costs less than one day of most ship internet packages. The two are not substitutes at sea, where only ship Wi-Fi works.

How do I stop roaming charges at sea?

Turn off mobile data and data roaming on your home SIM before sailing, switch the eSIM line off when the ship leaves port, and use airplane mode with Wi-Fi at sea. Turn the eSIM back on when the port is in sight.
