At sea versus in port: the routine that avoids a satellite bill
Before sailingInstall the eSIM on Wi-Fi at home. Turn off mobile data and data roaming on your home SIM for the whole trip; keep it on for calls and SMS only.
Leaving portSwitch the eSIM line off (Settings, Mobile Data, the eSIM line, off). Do this as the ship pulls out, not when you notice the bars fade.
At seaAirplane mode plus Wi-Fi is the safe setting. The ship's cellular network (often shown as Cellular at Sea or a maritime carrier) bills your home SIM at satellite roaming rates.
Arriving in portWhen you can see the terminal, turn the eSIM line back on and set it as the data line. Maps, ride apps and messaging run on local data at the plan price.
Running lowTop up the same eSIM from your account; nothing to reinstall. Data starts counting on first connection in each country, not at purchase.

Questions

Will my eSIM work on the cruise ship?

In port and for a few kilometres out, yes: your phone uses the local network like any visitor. Once the ship is at sea there is no land network, and the ship's own cellular system bills your home SIM at satellite rates, so switch the eSIM line off and use ship Wi-Fi or airplane mode until the next port.

Do I need one eSIM per port on a Caribbean cruise?

You need one plan per country visited: 10 on this route, about $78.80 in total for the smallest 7-day plans. Install them all before you sail; each starts only when it first connects in its country.

What about Cellular at Sea charges?

The ship's maritime network appears as a normal roaming partner to your home SIM and charges several dollars per megabyte. Turn off mobile data on your home SIM before sailing and keep the eSIM line off between ports; enable it again when you can see the port.

Can I keep WhatsApp working at sea?

Only over the ship's Wi-Fi package. In port, WhatsApp, maps and ride apps run on the eSIM data. Messages sent while at sea deliver when you reconnect.

How much data for a 7 nights cruise?

Port days are short, so 3GB to 5GB covers maps, messaging and photos for a week of stops; add 5GB if you stream or upload video in port. Top-ups add data to the same eSIM without a new install.
