How T-Mobile Structures International Roaming

T-Mobile offers one roaming pack family, the International Pass, in three options. The 1 day pass carries 2GB of high-speed data. The 10 day pass carries 15GB. The 30 day pass carries 30GB. All three include unlimited calling and cover 215+ countries and destinations.

Roaming is also built into eligible T-Mobile plans. Those plans include data and texting in 215+ countries and destinations. Depending on the rate plan, customers get up to 30GB of high-speed roaming data, then unlimited data at up to 256 Kbps. Pay-in-advance plans and No Credit Check plans are excluded from the international roaming benefit. On qualifying plans you can call, text and browse in Mexico and Canada with no setup and no roaming charges. The full Canada and Mexico experience is not available on basic plans such as Essentials 2.0.

Adding a Pass, Charges and Data Limits

International Passes are added in the T-Life app, in My T-Mobile, or by dialling 611. If you do not choose a start date, the pass starts immediately. Only one International Pass can be active at a time. Activating a new pass ends the remaining benefits of the previous one.

T-Mobile sends an SMS when you have used 80% of your high-speed roaming data. A second SMS, sent when it is all used, explains how to buy an International Pass. If you use all of a pass's high-speed data before it ends, you keep unlimited texting and your rate plan's roaming data benefit.

While roaming, an answered incoming call is charged for its full duration. An unanswered call that goes to voicemail while the phone is on is charged as one minute. More than 20 countries and destinations have no rate plan benefits or International Pass coverage and are charged pay per use.

Keeping the Home Number and Using an eSIM for Data

A traveller on a T-Mobile plan can keep the home SIM in the phone for calls, texts and bank codes, and use a data-only travel eSIM from Slashtel for mobile data. The eSIM connects to local networks with automatic network selection. It is installed by QR code before the trip and switched on when you land. A data-only eSIM has no phone number, so calls and texts stay on the home SIM or go over internet apps.
