Thailand SIM card: local SIM vs travel eSIM for tourists

Last checked: October 2026

A Thailand SIM card comes in two forms. A local Thai SIM gives you a Thai phone number and calls, but you must register it with your passport and a live face scan. A travel eSIM is data only, bought online before you fly, with no passport check and no shop visit.

What you need for a Thailand SIM card

Thai SIM cards are tied to a named buyer, so registration is part of the purchase. You need your original passport with you, not a photocopy or a photo on your phone.

Since 18 August 2025 a new Thai SIM is also registered with a live face scan as well as the passport. That is done at a counter or inside the operator's official app. It is a normal step, not a problem, but it does mean the purchase takes a few minutes longer than you might expect.

Where tourists buy a local SIM

Tourist SIMs are sold at airport counters, operator shops and convenience stores. Airport counters are the easiest if you want to be connected the moment you land, and staff there are used to passport and face scan checks. Operator shops in city malls are quieter and give you more time to ask questions. Convenience stores are handy if you are already in town, though not every branch will have the tourist plans in stock.

Whichever you choose, bring your passport and expect the face scan to be part of the process.

Local SIM or travel eSIM: which suits which trip

A local SIM is the better fit if you want a Thai phone number for local calls, restaurant bookings or deliveries, or if you plan to stay a long time and want a local plan. You pay for that with the registration steps and a shop visit.

A travel eSIM suits a shorter trip, a late arrival, or anyone who would rather sort connectivity before leaving the UK. It is data only, so there is no local number, but calls and messages work over data apps such as WhatsApp. No passport check, no queue, and nothing swapped out of your phone. If you are weighing up the two formats in general, our guide to eSIM vs physical SIM sets out the differences.

Buying and installing an eSIM before you fly

You buy the eSIM online with an email address and card payment. The QR code arrives by email within minutes of payment, and you do not need an account. Install it at home on wifi, following our install guide for iPhone and Android, and check your phone is eSIM compatible and unlocked first.

Validity starts when the eSIM first connects at the destination, so buying and installing early costs you nothing in days. Keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank OTP texts, and turn off data roaming on the home SIM to avoid charges. The eSIM runs alongside it, so nothing is removed. Hotspot and tethering are allowed, and more data can be added to the same eSIM later without a new QR code. The network is chosen automatically for the best signal and cannot be picked by hand. You can buy a Thailand eSIM whenever you are ready, or read the full Thailand eSIM guide first.

How much data to get

Pick data by trip length and how much you tether. A short city break with maps and messaging sits comfortably in a small plan, while a longer trip with photos, video calls and laptop tethering needs more. Validity options are 7, 10, 15 or 30 days, and data options are 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 or 50 GB.

Slashtel prices by data amount:

If you run low, top up the same eSIM rather than buying again. A 30 day plan is a common pick for a two week holiday with a buffer, and the best tourist SIM card Thailand choice often comes down to how much you tether.

Calls, WhatsApp and bank texts

The eSIM is data only, so there is no local phone number. Calls and messages go over data apps such as WhatsApp, which is fine for most travellers. For anything that needs your UK number, including bank OTP texts, leave your home SIM in the phone and keep it active for incoming texts with data roaming switched off.

Our guide to calls, texts and OTPs with an eSIM explains how to set the two lines up so your bank messages still arrive. If you are new to the format, how eSIM works covers the basics in plain terms.

Questions, answered

What is the best SIM card for Thailand if I land late at night?

A travel eSIM is the simplest option for a late arrival. Install it before you fly, and it connects when you land, so you skip the airport counter and the registration queue.

Can I get a SIM card Thailand tourist plan without my passport?

Not for a local Thai SIM. Registration requires the buyer's original passport, and since 18 August 2025 a new Thai SIM is also registered with a live face scan at a counter or in the operator's official app. A travel eSIM needs no passport check.

Is a data SIM card Thailand travellers buy online enough for a two week trip?

For most people, yes. Maps, messaging and browsing use little data. Choose a larger amount if you tether a laptop or make video calls, and you can add more to the same eSIM later without a new QR code.

How much does a Thailand SIM card price compare between the two options?

We do not quote local SIM prices, as they vary by shop and plan. Slashtel eSIM prices depend on the data amount, starting at $2.29 for 1 GB, with 50 GB at $17.89.

Where can I buy a SIM card in Thailand if I prefer a local number?

Tourist SIMs are sold at airport counters, operator shops and convenience stores. Bring your original passport and allow a few extra minutes for the face scan at purchase.

Does a 7-Eleven SIM card Thailand option include the same checks?

Any new Thai SIM is registered to you, so the passport and live face scan rules apply wherever you buy it, including convenience stores. Staff will guide you through it at the counter.

Can I get a SIM card Thailand 30 days plan with the eSIM?

Yes. Validity options include 30 days, and the countdown starts when the eSIM first connects in Thailand, not when you buy it. That makes early installation safe.

Will my UK bank texts still arrive while I use the eSIM?

Yes, if you keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and OTP texts and turn off data roaming on that line. The eSIM handles data alongside it, so nothing is swapped out.
