How to Check if Your iPhone Is Unlocked (Before You Buy an eSIM)

How to get your iPhone unlocked

Carrier lock is about the network. Only your carrier can remove it. Activation Lock is about ownership. It prevents someone else from using your iPhone if it is lost or stolen. If you buy a second hand iPhone, check both. A phone can be free of carrier lock but still have Activation Lock enabled. Activation Lock will stop you from setting up the phone at all.

Checking a second-hand iPhone

Before you buy a second-hand iPhone, check Carrier Lock in Settings and make sure Activation Lock is off. Ask the seller to show you both. If you cannot check in person, ask for a screenshot of Settings > General > About.

Here is what to do:

1. Meet the seller and ask to hold the iPhone.
2. Open Settings > General > About and check Carrier Lock.
3. If it says No SIM restrictions, the phone is unlocked.
4. Ask the seller to erase the iPhone in front of you. This removes Activation Lock if they sign out of their Apple Account.
5. Set up the iPhone yourself to confirm no Activation Lock screen appears.

If the seller cannot show you these steps, treat the phone as risky. A locked iPhone will not work with a travel eSIM from another provider, and an Activation Locked iPhone cannot be used at all.

Once you have an unlocked iPhone, you can install a travel eSIM and connect when you arrive. Remember to check eSIM compatibility as well as the lock status.
