+252 country code: Somalia

Who uses the +252 code

The +252 country code serves Somalia, the only country on this page. The country's official name is the Federal Republic of Somalia and its ISO code is SO. People in Somalia, known as Somalis, use +252 numbers for mobile calls and messages. The capital is Mogadishu. The country sits in Eastern Africa, within the wider African region.

Languages, currency and local time

Somalia has two official languages, Arabic and Somali. The currency is the Somali shilling. Local time follows the Africa/Nairobi time zone at UTC+03:00. The international number format for a Somali mobile is +252 7 1123456. The +252 prefix comes first, followed by the local mobile number, written here in the example format above. Use this layout when you give a +252 number to someone outside Somalia. Arabic and Somali speakers in Mogadishu and across the country use the same +252 code and the same number layout.

Calling and messaging over the internet

You can call or message a +252 number over the internet using a data connection. A voice over IP app or messaging service carries the call or message over your data plan rather than a traditional international route. This suits people who contact family, friends or colleagues in Somalia from abroad. The person you reach in Somalia keeps their +252 number and answers on their own mobile. A stable data connection supports both voice calls and text messages to Somali numbers. The same data connection can carry calls to Mogadishu and other parts of the country.

Sending credit to Somalia operators

Slashtel sends prepaid mobile top-ups to three Somalia operators: Hormuud, Somtel and Telesom. You can top up a Somalia number through the recharge page and send credit directly to a prepaid mobile on any of these operators. The recipient then uses the credit for calls and messages on their +252 number. This gives Somali users a way to keep their prepaid balance active. The Somali shilling is the currency in use locally, while top-ups are handled through the recharge service. The Africa/Nairobi time zone at UTC+03:00 applies across Somalia, so top-up timing follows local Somali time. Arabic and Somali remain the languages used by recipients of these top-ups.
