Switzerland Visa from the UK: 2026 Guide
Last checked: 25 October 2026
If you are a non-British national living legally in the UK, you apply for a Switzerland Schengen visa through VFS Global, the only authorised centre for Switzerland in the UK, and lodge it no earlier than 6 months and no later than 15 days before travel. British citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Who needs a Switzerland visa in the UK
British citizens travelling on a full British passport do not need a visa for Switzerland: GOV.UK says you can stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and earlier Schengen trips in the previous 180 days count towards that limit. Everyone else living in the UK needs to check their own nationality against the Swiss list and apply here, because the European Commission says you apply at the consulate responsible for the country where you legally reside.
GOV.UK's entry requirement pages only cover people travelling on a full British citizen passport, and point holders of other passports to the relevant embassy in the UK. That means a Swiss visa application from the UK is normal and expected for non-British nationals who hold valid UK residence.
Two separate things to keep apart:
- A Schengen short-stay visa, which is what this guide covers, allows a visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A single-entry visa allows one entry, a multiple-entry visa allows several visits while it is valid, and an airport transit visa only covers the international transit area of an airport.
- ETIAS is a travel authorisation for visa-free visitors only. People who need a Schengen visa do not apply for ETIAS. ETIAS is not yet operating and is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026, with a fee of EUR 20.
If you are still working out which visa you need for Europe more widely, our guide to the Schengen visa sets out the categories and the general rules.
Which Switzerland mission and visa centre you use
VFS Global is the only authorised agent to accept and process visa applications for Switzerland in the UK, and an application submitted with any other provider will not be valid. Short-stay appointments can only be booked through VFS Global. The Embassy of Switzerland's Regional Consular Centre London is at 16 to 18 Montagu Place, London W1H 2BQ, as printed on the embassy checklist.
The embassy does not give visa information by telephone. Visa questions go to london.visa@eda.admin.ch, and the embassy's visa page shows 'Published on 6 May 2026'.
Apply at the consulate of the country you intend to visit. If you visit more than one country, apply to the country where you will spend the longest time, the main destination. If the stays are equal, apply to the country you will enter first. As a general rule, apply in the country where you legally live, which for a UK resident means the UK.
The visa application must be submitted in your country of residence. If you are a UK resident, it must be submitted to the Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global, and document dates are calculated from the application date.
Booking the Switzerland visa appointment in the UK
Applications can be submitted to VFS Global at the earliest 6 months and at the latest 15 days before travel, depending on the availability of appointment slots. Book the slot before you date your bank statements and employment letter, because those documents must be recent when you attend.
A practical order of work:
- Confirm your main destination and the dates of your trip.
- Book the VFS Global appointment for a date at least 15 days before travel and no more than 6 months ahead.
- Collect the documents listed in the next section, watching the age limits on each one.
- Attend the appointment in person unless you are exempt from biometrics, and pay the fee on submission.
Children under 12 do not need to appear in person or give fingerprints. Fingerprints are generally collected every 59 months from age 12, and biometric data is kept in the Visa Information System for 5 years.
Switzerland visa fees from the UK
The embassy counter price list, with prices valid from 8.12.2025, gives the adult visa fee as EUR 90.00 or GBP 79, and the fee for a child aged 6 to 12 as EUR 45.00 or GBP 40. The fee is due on submission, is not refundable, and the representation may adapt amounts at any time. Payment is by card only, and American Express is not accepted. VFS adds its own service fee.
The Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, and the fee can be waived for some categories of applicant. Visa application centres may charge their own service fee on top, so budget for the embassy fee plus the VFS charge.
If the application is refused, you can appeal within 30 days of receipt. The fee itself is not returned, whatever the outcome.
Documents for a Switzerland visa
The embassy checklist is strict about dates: bank statements must be not more than one week old and cover at least the past 3 months, and the employment letter must be dated not more than one week old. The passport must have been issued within the past 10 years, be valid for more than 3 months beyond the validity of the requested visa, and have two blank visa pages, which need not be consecutive.
Core documents:
- One passport-size photo, no more than 6 months old, undamaged, on a light plain background.
- The UK residence permit, original and copy, valid for more than one month from the day you exit the Schengen area.
- A Home Office share code showing your status in the UK, which is mandatory.
- Bank statements from a UK bank account showing name, account number and last balance. Online statements are accepted if they show the account holder's name and account details.
- An employment letter on company letterhead with a wet or electronic signature, giving your name and address, position, start date and the signatory's position, plus payslips for the past 3 months.
- Travel insurance from a UK or Schengen-based company, covering all Schengen states for the whole stay, with at least EUR 30,000 for emergency medical expenses and repatriation, on the insurer's letterhead. Bank-provided cover needs a bank letter no more than one month old.
For a minor, the application form must be signed by both parents. If one parent is abroad, submit a dated, signed consent letter with a copy of that parent's passport. Also required: a birth certificate and a recent British school certificate. Foreign-language certificates must be translated into German, French, Italian or English.
The general Schengen visa document list covers the standard requirements if you are applying for another country too.
Processing time and when to apply
The embassy tourist checklist gives processing as approximately 5 working days from receipt, and up to 14 working days for nationals subject to Schengen consultation. The embassy's procedure page says a decision is generally taken within 15 days, so plan around the longer figure.
A decision is normally made within 15 days, and this can be extended to up to 45 days when the application needs a closer look or more documents. Do not book non-refundable travel on the assumption of a fast decision.
Because the window opens 6 months before travel and closes 15 days before it, the comfortable approach is to apply well inside that range, with documents dated for the week of your appointment.
The 90/180 rule in Switzerland and the rest of Schengen
The 90/180-day rule is a moving window: on each day of a stay, count back 180 days, and the days spent in the Schengen area in that window must not exceed 90. The day of entry and the day of exit both count as days of stay, and all Schengen countries share one allowance.
The Schengen area has 29 member countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania became full members on 1 January 2025. Cyprus and Ireland are EU countries that are not in the Schengen area.
Days spent in the UK do not count towards the 90 days, and time spent under a residence permit or long-stay visa from a Schengen country is not counted either. After 90 days in a row outside the Schengen area, a new stay of up to 90 days is possible. You can test your own dates with our Schengen calculator.
The EU Entry/Exit System records non-EU nationals on a short stay at the external Schengen border: passport details, fingerprints, a facial image and the date and place of each entry and exit. It started on 12 October 2025, has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, and replaces passport stamping. It detects people who stay longer than allowed. Registration is free and there is nothing to apply for in advance. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints, and holders of a long-stay visa or residence permit from an EES country are not registered. Our EES guide explains what happens at the border.
Data in Switzerland
Slashtel's Europe+ eSIM works in all 29 Schengen countries, plus the UK and Turkey, so data keeps working when you cross a border. It is data only: there is no local phone number and no calls or SMS, though WhatsApp and other internet calls work over the data.
Keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank codes, and turn off data roaming on it to avoid roaming charges. The eSIM is bought online with an email address and a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the QR code arrives by email within minutes. Someone else can buy it and enter the traveller's email, so the QR code goes straight to the person who will use it.
Validity starts when the eSIM first connects at the destination, so it can be bought and installed at home before the flight. The network is chosen automatically and cannot be picked by hand, and more data can be added to the same eSIM later with no new QR code. The phone must be unlocked and eSIM compatible. See the Europe eSIM page for coverage, or estimate your usage with the data calculator.
If you would rather keep a prepaid home line active while you travel, Slashtel also sells mobile top-ups to more than 100 countries, delivered in minutes. Support is on WhatsApp and email, 7 days a week.

Where is the Swiss embassy in London for visa questions?
The Embassy of Switzerland's Regional Consular Centre London is at 16 to 18 Montagu Place, London W1H 2BQ, as printed on the embassy checklist. The embassy does not give visa information by telephone, so visa questions go to london.visa@eda.admin.ch.
Can I apply for a Switzerland visa in the UK if I am not British?
Yes, if you live legally in the UK. The European Commission says you apply at the consulate with territorial responsibility for the country where you are legally resident, so non-British nationals living legally in the UK apply in the UK. Your UK residence permit must be valid for more than one month from the day you exit the Schengen area.
Does a Swiss visa let me travel to other Schengen countries?
Yes. A Schengen short-stay visa allows a visit of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the 29 Schengen countries, which include Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and, since 1 January 2025, Bulgaria and Romania as full members. Cyprus and Ireland are EU countries that are not in the Schengen area.
Do I need ETIAS if I have a Swiss visa?
No. ETIAS is a separate travel authorisation for visa-free visitors only, and people who need a Schengen visa do not apply for ETIAS. ETIAS is not yet operating and is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026, with a fee of EUR 20.
