Switzerland Visa from Dubai: UAE Guide
Last checked: 25 October 2026
UAE residents apply for a Switzerland Schengen visa through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, after completing the form online and booking a free appointment. You must show Switzerland is your main destination, pay EUR 90 plus the VFS service fee, and allow 15 calendar days for a decision.
Who needs a Switzerland visa in the UAE
If you hold a UAE residence visa and want to visit Switzerland, you need a Schengen short-stay visa unless you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country. The Swiss Consulate General in Dubai does not take visa applications at all: short-stay Schengen files go through VFS Global, and long-stay visas go through the embassy in Abu Dhabi.
A Schengen short-stay visa allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A single-entry visa allows one entry, a multiple-entry visa allows several visits while it is valid, and an airport transit visa only covers the international transit area of an airport.
Two rules decide whether your file is accepted:
- You apply to the country of your main destination. If you visit several Schengen countries, that is the one where you spend the longest time; if the stays are equal, the country you enter first.
- As a general rule you apply in the country where you are legally resident, so a UAE residence visa is the basis of your application in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
The embassy states plainly that applications where Switzerland is not the main destination are not accepted. If Switzerland is one stop on a longer European trip, check the Schengen visa guide before you book anything.
Where to apply in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Schengen applications for Switzerland from the UAE are taken by VFS Global at centres in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The Swiss Consulate General in Dubai does not accept visa applications, and long-stay national visas are handled by the embassy in Abu Dhabi.
You cannot walk in. You register and book an appointment on the VFS website first, and the booking itself is free. An appointment is mandatory: no application is accepted without one, at VFS or at the embassy.
Before the appointment, complete the visa application form online. The form comes before the booking, not after it.
Your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID must be valid for at least one month beyond your planned return according to the embassy web page, while the March 2026 tourist checklist asks for 3 months beyond your departure from the Schengen area. Treat 3 months as the safe margin. If your residency does not run that long, add proof that you have applied to renew it.
Fingerprints are taken at the centre unless you already gave them within the last 59 months. If your fingerprints are less than 59 months old you do not need to apply in person and may send an authorised representative.
Booking the appointment
Register on the VFS Global website, complete the application form online, then book your slot at the Dubai or Abu Dhabi centre. The booking is free and mandatory, and you should aim to lodge no earlier than 6 months before the trip and at least 15 days before it.
A practical order of work:
- Complete the visa application form online.
- Register and book the appointment on the VFS website for Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
- Assemble the documents listed in the next section, in English or an official Swiss language, or with a translation.
- Attend the centre for submission and fingerprints, unless you qualify to send a representative.
- Track the return of your passport to the centre where you lodged the file.
If you are applying for a child, both parents sign the form and add passport copies. A minor travelling alone or with one parent needs original parental consent signed before a visa officer or duly legalised.
Note that the passport cannot be withdrawn during processing, so do not plan other travel that needs it.
Fees and service charges
The Switzerland visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, paid in the equivalent local currency. Children under 6 pay nothing, VFS charges its own service fee on top, and the visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused or the application withdrawn.
What to budget for:
- Adult visa fee: EUR 90.
- Child aged 6 to 12: EUR 45.
- Child under 6: no visa fee.
- VFS Global service fee: charged separately by the centre, on top of the visa fee.
- Appeal, if you are refused: a fee is charged, and it is refunded if the appeal succeeds.
Some categories of applicant can have the fee waived under the general Schengen rules. The fee is a fixed official charge, so treat any quote that bundles it with other costs carefully and ask what the service fee covers.
Documents for a Switzerland visa from the UAE
The March 2026 tourist checklist asks for a passport, one ICAO photo, travel insurance issued in the UAE or Bahrain, hotel bookings for the full stay, a full itinerary, proof of funds and an employment or business letter. Employees need an original stamped letter with salary, joining date and approved leave dates.
The document set in detail:
- Photo: one ICAO-compliant colour photo, 35 mm x 45 mm, taken within the last 6 months, white or light background without shadows, glued to the form.
- Insurance: travel health insurance issued in the UAE or Bahrain, covering the whole Schengen stay with at least EUR 30,000 including repatriation. Credit card insurance is not accepted.
- Accommodation and travel: hotel reservations covering the full Schengen stay, plus a full itinerary with arrival and departure flights. The checklist advises against buying tickets before the visa is issued.
- Money: payslips, a valid international credit card with bank statements, bank statements for the last three months, or a sponsorship and accommodation form.
- Employees: an original, stamped letter on company letterhead giving company, position, joining date, salary, approved leave dates and confirmation that employment continues after the trip.
- Company owners: the same kind of letter, signed by someone other than themselves.
- Self-employed: the original trade licence.
- Sponsored on a spouse's or parent's visa: an NOC letter from that sponsor.
- If the employer is not a well-known Swiss or multinational company: add hotel confirmations, the trade licence and the last 3 months of bank statements.
All documents must be in English or an official Swiss language, or translated.
Processing time and when to apply
A decision normally takes 15 calendar days. Lodge no earlier than 6 months before the trip and at least 15 days before it, and expect longer if another Schengen state has to be consulted or the case is sent to Switzerland.
Where the extra time comes from:
- Standard: 15 calendar days.
- Consultation of another Schengen state for certain nationalities: up to 14 calendar days more.
- Cases sent to Switzerland: up to 12 weeks.
If the visa is refused, you can appeal within 30 days for a fee, which is refunded if the appeal succeeds. The passport cannot be withdrawn during processing.
Because the appointment comes before submission, book the slot as soon as your dates are fixed rather than waiting until the documents are complete.
The 90/180 rule and the Entry/Exit System
Your Schengen visa allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted as a moving window: on each day of a stay, count back 180 days and keep the total at 90 or less. The day of entry and the day of exit both count, and all Schengen countries share one allowance.
The Schengen area has 29 members: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania became full members on 1 January 2025; Cyprus and Ireland are EU countries outside the Schengen area.
Days in the UK do not count, and neither does time under a residence permit or long-stay visa from a Schengen country. After 90 days in a row outside the Schengen area, a new stay of up to 90 days is possible. Run your dates through the Schengen calculator before booking flights.
The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU short-stay travellers at the external Schengen border: passport details, fingerprints, a facial image and the date and place of each entry and exit. It started on 12 October 2025, has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, and replaces passport stamping. Registration is free, children under 12 give no fingerprints, and holders of a long-stay visa or residence permit from an EES country are not registered. ETIAS is separate and applies only to visa-free visitors, so a Schengen visa holder does not apply for it; it is not yet operating and is expected in the last quarter of 2026 with a fee of EUR 20.
Data in Switzerland and topping up home
A UAE SIM used in Switzerland falls under roaming, so data is best handled with a travel eSIM while the home SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank codes. Slashtel's Europe+ eSIM works in all 29 Schengen countries, plus the UK and Turkey, so data keeps working when you cross a border.
How the eSIM side works:
- Slashtel eSIMs are data only: no local phone number and no calls or SMS. WhatsApp and other internet calls work over the data.
- Keep the home SIM in the phone for calls and bank codes, and turn off data roaming on it to avoid roaming charges.
- Buy online with an email address and a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay; the QR code arrives by email within minutes.
- Someone else can buy it and enter the traveller's email, so the QR code goes straight to the person who will use it.
- Validity starts when the eSIM first connects at the destination, so it can be bought and installed at home before the flight.
- The network is chosen automatically and cannot be picked by hand, and more data can be added later with no new QR code.
- The phone must be unlocked and eSIM compatible.
If you would rather keep your UAE prepaid line active for incoming codes, Slashtel also sells mobile top-ups to more than 100 countries, delivered in minutes. See the Europe eSIM page and the data calculator to size a plan, and read how calls, texts and OTPs work with a data eSIM before you fly. Support is on WhatsApp and email, 7 days a week.

Questions, answered
Do I need a Switzerland Schengen visa from the UAE if I already hold a residence visa?
A UAE residence visa does not exempt you from the visa; it is the basis on which you apply in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Unless you hold a passport from a visa-exempt country, you need a Schengen short-stay visa for Switzerland, and Switzerland must be your main destination.
Where is the Swiss visa appointment in Dubai held?
Schengen applications are taken by VFS Global at centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, not at the Swiss Consulate General in Dubai. Long-stay national visas go through the embassy in Abu Dhabi. You must register and book on the VFS website first, and the booking is free.
What are the Switzerland visa fees in Dubai?
The visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, paid in the equivalent local currency. Children under 6 pay nothing. VFS Global charges its own service fee on top, and the visa fee is not refunded if the visa is refused or the application withdrawn.
Which documents do UAE applicants need for a Switzerland visa?
The March 2026 checklist asks for a passport, one ICAO photo 35 mm x 45 mm, insurance issued in the UAE or Bahrain with at least EUR 30,000 cover including repatriation, hotel bookings for the full stay, a full itinerary, three months of bank statements or other proof of funds, and an original stamped employment letter or trade licence.
How long does the Swiss visa take from the UAE?
Processing takes 15 calendar days as a rule. If another Schengen state must be consulted it can add up to 14 calendar days for certain nationalities, and cases sent to Switzerland can take up to 12 weeks. Lodge no earlier than 6 months before the trip and at least 15 days before it.
How long must my UAE residence visa be valid for a Swiss visa application?
The embassy web page says your residence visa and Emirates ID must be valid at least one month beyond the planned return, while the March 2026 tourist checklist asks for 3 months beyond departure from the Schengen area. Use 3 months as the safe margin, or add proof that you have applied to renew your residency.
Do I have to attend the VFS centre in person?
Fingerprints are taken from first-time applicants and from anyone whose fingerprints were taken more than 59 months ago. If your fingerprints are less than 59 months old, you do not need to apply in person and may send an authorised representative.
Is credit card insurance accepted for the Swiss visa?
No. Travel health insurance must be issued in the UAE or Bahrain, cover the whole Schengen stay with at least EUR 30,000 including repatriation, and credit card insurance is not accepted. Buy a policy that meets those conditions before your appointment.
What happens if my Switzerland visa is refused?
You can appeal within 30 days for a fee, which is refunded if the appeal succeeds. The visa fee itself is not refunded when a visa is refused or an application is withdrawn, and the passport cannot be withdrawn during processing.
Can I use my UAE SIM data in Switzerland, and does the 90/180 rule count UK days?
A UAE SIM in Switzerland is roaming, so a data eSIM keeps costs predictable while the home SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank codes. Days spent in the UK do not count towards the 90 days, and neither does time under a Schengen residence permit or long-stay visa. Check dates with the [Schengen calculator](/tools/schengen-calculator).
