Greece Visa from UK: Complete Application Guide
Last checked: 25 October 2026
British citizens do not need a visa for Greece for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Non-British nationals living in the UK who need a Schengen visa apply through Greece's visa centre, GVCW, in London, Manchester or Edinburgh, by online appointment only. The type C visa fee is EUR 90, shown as GBP 79.20, plus a EUR 30 service fee.
Who needs a Greece visa in the UK
British citizens do not need a visa for Greece: GOV.UK says you can travel to the Schengen area without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and earlier Schengen visits in the previous 180 days count towards the 90 days. If you hold another passport, the GOV.UK entry requirement pages point you to the relevant embassy in the UK.
For non-British nationals, the European Commission says you apply at the consulate with territorial responsibility for the country where you are legally resident. That means if you live legally in the UK, you apply in the UK, not in your country of nationality. The Greek visa application centre checks that you have a permanent or temporary UK residence permit valid for at least 1 month after your intended return to the UK. You must also provide a copy of your UK eVisa and a share code for visa purposes. The tourism checklist states that a C type visitor visa cannot be accepted.
If you are a British citizen but will be travelling with family members who need a visa, each applicant needs their own appointment and documents. For a full overview of the Schengen visa process, see our Schengen visa guide.
Which Greece mission and visa centre you use
Greece's UK visa applications are handled by Global Visa Center World (GVCW) at Visa Application Centres in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Applications are accepted only by online appointment, and GVCW runs a call centre for applicants who cannot find a slot. The London centre address is 66 Wilson Street, London EC2A 2BT.
Check the Manchester and Edinburgh addresses on the GVCW website when you book. The centre will check your UK residence permit and eVisa share code. If you cannot find an appointment online, use the GVCW call centre rather than turning up without a booking. For more on Schengen visa applications from the UK, see our Schengen visa from UK guide.
Booking the appointment
You book a Greece visa appointment online through GVCW. Applications are accepted only by online appointment, and GVCW runs a call centre for applicants who cannot find a slot. You can apply up to 6 months before your trip and no later than 15 calendar days before it, but GVCW advises applying well in advance because demand for Greece is high.
When you book, have your passport and UK residence permit ready. The appointment is for you to attend in person so that biometric data can be taken: ten fingerprints and a digital photo. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting. If you need a slot urgently, call the GVCW call centre. Do not book through unofficial agents. For a broader view of Schengen visa appointments, see our Schengen visa guide.
Fees and service charges
The type C visa fee is EUR 90, shown as GBP 79.20, and is paid in pounds at the centre at the exchange rate on the day you apply. GVCW adds its own service fee of EUR 30 per application including VAT, converted at the daily rate. Children under 12 are listed as free, and fees are not refunded on refusal.
Bring a payment card or cash as instructed by the centre. The fee is per applicant, so a family of four pays four visa fees plus four service fees. The fee is not refunded if the visa is refused. For the latest fees, check the GVCW website before you travel. For more on Schengen visa fees, see our Schengen visa guide.
Documents for a Greece visa
The documents for a Greece visa from the UK include a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your last day in the Schengen area, with at least two adjacent blank pages and issued within the last 10 years. You also need two colour photos, 3.5 x 4 cm, no more than 6 months old, proof of funds, employment evidence, travel insurance and return tickets.
Here is the full checklist:
- Passport: valid for at least 3 months beyond your last day in the Schengen area, at least two adjacent blank pages, issued within the last 10 years. A passport older than 10 years is not accepted, even if extended. Include copies of Schengen visas issued in the last three years.
- Photos: two colour photos, 3.5 x 4 cm, facing forward, white or off-white background, no more than 6 months old.
- Proof of funds: a UK personal current account statement covering the last three months (not less than 90 days of transactions), in your name, into which salary is paid. The closing balance must be no older than 30 days from application and show at least GBP 40 per day of stay in the Schengen area. Only immediate family members may sponsor.
- Employees: a recent employment letter (no older than 1 month), with an original stamp and signature from HR, addressed to the Mission and stating the date of recruitment and position, plus payslips for the last three months.
- Travel: fully paid return tickets. Tickets from agencies must be based in Europe and come with a receipt showing no outstanding balance.
- Travel insurance: must show your full name, be valid for all Schengen states for the entire stay and give at least EUR 30,000 cover for repatriation, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment and death. Bank-provided cover needs a bank letter no older than 30 days, because bank statements alone are not sufficient.
- Minors: both parents should attend the appointment unless only one holds parental authority. The form must be originally signed by both parents. Also required: both parents' passports, a full unabridged birth certificate (translated by a certified UK translator if not in English or Greek) and a parental consent form. The consent form must be certified by the Embassy of Greece and be no older than 30 days.
A visa officer may require a personal or Skype interview at the Greek Consular Office in London, which can delay the decision. For more on Schengen visa documents, see our Schengen visa guide.
Processing time and when to apply
Processing can take up to 15 calendar days. For some nationalities subject to prior consultation the minimum is 3 weeks, and further checks can take up to 45 days. Applications lodged in Manchester or Edinburgh need an extra 5 days.
Apply as early as possible. You can lodge your application up to 6 months before your trip and no later than 15 calendar days before it. GVCW advises applying well in advance because demand for Greece is high. If you apply in Manchester or Edinburgh, add 5 days to the processing time. Do not book non-refundable travel until you have your visa. For more on Schengen processing times, see our Schengen visa guide.
The 90/180 rule in Greece and the rest of Schengen
The 90/180-day rule is a moving window: on each day of a stay, count back 180 days; the days spent in the Schengen area in that window must not exceed 90. The day of entry and the day of exit both count as days of stay. All Schengen countries share one allowance.
The Schengen area has 29 member countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania became full members on 1 January 2025. Cyprus and Ireland are EU countries that are not in the Schengen area.
Days spent in the UK do not count towards the 90 days, and time spent under a residence permit or long-stay visa from a Schengen country is not counted either. After 90 days in a row outside the Schengen area, a new stay of up to 90 days is possible. Use our Schengen calculator to check your days.
The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU nationals on a short stay at the external Schengen border: passport details, fingerprints, a facial image and the date and place of each entry and exit. It started on 12 October 2025, has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, and replaces passport stamping. It detects people who stay longer than allowed. EES registration is free and there is nothing to apply for in advance. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints. Holders of a long-stay visa or residence permit from an EES country are not registered. For details, see our EES guide.
ETIAS is a separate travel authorisation for visa-free visitors only; people who need a Schengen visa do not apply for ETIAS. ETIAS is not yet operating and is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026, with a fee of EUR 20. British citizens will need ETIAS when it starts. For more on the 90/180 rule, see our Schengen visa guide.
Data in Greece
Slashtel's Europe+ eSIM works in all 29 Schengen countries, plus the UK and Turkey, so data keeps working when you cross a border. It is data only: no local phone number and no calls or SMS, but WhatsApp and other internet calls work over the data.
Keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank codes, and turn off data roaming on it to avoid roaming charges. The eSIM is bought online with an email address and a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay; the QR code arrives by email within minutes. Someone else can buy the eSIM and enter the traveller's email, so the QR code goes straight to the person who will use it. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects at the destination, so it can be bought and installed at home before the flight. The network is chosen automatically and cannot be picked by hand. More data can be added to the same eSIM later, with no new QR code. The phone must be unlocked and eSIM compatible. Slashtel also sells mobile top-ups to more than 100 countries, delivered in minutes, which keep a prepaid home line active. Support is on WhatsApp and email, 7 days a week. For data needs, see our data calculator and Greece destination page.
