Germany Visa from Dubai: UAE Guide to Schengen Applications
Last checked: 25 October 2026
Germany visa applications in the UAE are decided by the German Consulate General in Dubai, and every applicant lodges the file through VFS Global, by appointment only. Dubai and Northern Emirates residents use VFS Global Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain residents use VFS Global Abu Dhabi. You can apply up to 6 months before travel, fees are paid in local currency, and processing can take up to 15 days.
Who needs a Germany visa in the UAE
If you hold a UAE residence permit and want to visit Germany for tourism, family or business, you need a Schengen short-stay visa unless your nationality is visa exempt. The application is lodged in the country where you legally live, and for Germany in the UAE that means the German Consulate General in Dubai, which works only with VFS Global.
A Schengen short-stay visa allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A single-entry visa covers one entry, a multiple-entry visa covers several visits while it is valid, and an airport transit visa only covers the international transit area of an airport.
Apply to the country of your main destination. If you visit several Schengen countries, that is the one where you spend the longest time; if the stays are equal, it is the country you enter first. The Schengen area has 29 countries, so the same visa lets you cross into Austria, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Poland and the rest without a new application. Bulgaria and Romania became full members on 1 January 2025; Cyprus and Ireland are in the EU but not in Schengen. The full rules are in our Schengen visa guide.
Where to apply in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
All German visa applications in the UAE are processed and decided by the German Consulate General in Dubai, and the consulate works only with VFS Global. Residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates lodge at VFS Global in Dubai; residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain lodge at VFS Global in Abu Dhabi.
You cannot choose the centre freely: it follows your residence. Book under the correct category: Short Stay covers tourism and family visits, and Business is a separate category.
Two groups may walk in instead of booking: spouses of German or EU citizens, and parents of minor German or EU citizens, where the family lives in the UAE. Everyone else needs an appointment before the file can be lodged. The VFS Germany Dubai route is the only one for Dubai residents, so plan the trip around the waitlist rather than around a flight you have already paid for.
Booking the appointment
Appointments are by appointment only through a VFS waitlist. The mission asks applicants to register as soon as possible because of high demand, slots are released in chronological order, and a booking slot notification is only valid for 24 hours.
Register on the waitlist as soon as you decide to travel. When a slot is offered, the notification is valid for only 24 hours, so keep the email address on the registration current and check the inbox, including spam.
Before you accept a slot, have the file ready: passport, photos, insurance, bank statements and the employer letter.
Fees and service charges
The Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, and it can be waived for some categories of applicant. Germany collects the visa fee in cash in local currency at the consulate's current exchange rate, and the VFS service fee is separate and kept by VFS Global.
Budget for two payments, not one. The visa fee goes to the consulate and the service fee goes to VFS Global. Bring cash in local currency for the visa fee, which is worked out at the consulate's current exchange rate.
Children under 6 pay no visa fee under the standard Schengen scale. If you are unsure whether a waiver applies to you, ask before the appointment rather than at the counter. Keep both receipts with your travel file: they are useful if you later need to show when and where the application was lodged.
Documents for a Germany visa from the UAE
The tourism checklist is strict on the residence permit, insurance and employer letter. Your UAE residence permit must be valid at least three months after the requested visa expires or the trip ends, and travel medical insurance needs at least EUR 30,000 cover, valid in all Schengen countries for the whole stay, including repatriation.
Passport and identity:
- Passport issued within the last 10 years, with at least two free visa pages, signed by the holder, plus any previous passports.
- Two recent biometric photos, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, no older than 6 months, plain white background, face filling 70 to 80 percent of the frame. Head coverings only for religious reasons.
- Photocopies of the passport data and signature pages, the UAE residence permit and any previous Schengen visa. GCC nationals add a copy of a valid Emirates ID.
Insurance and travel:
- Travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 cover. Credit card insurance is not accepted, and the cover conditions must appear on the policy itself or in a separate confirmation letter.
- Hotel or accommodation booking showing the full address and a booking reference, plus a flight reservation.
Money and employment:
- Personal bank statements covering at least the last 3 months before applying, plus evidence of property or assets where relevant.
- Employer or sponsor letter (NOL) with the sponsor's name, postal address and phone number, and your position, start date, salary, leave period with expected return date and purpose of travel.
- Investors or partners in a company add a copy of the company trade licence. Where dependants are included, add the sponsor's passport and UAE residence permit copies.
Under 18: both parents sign the form, and the file adds a birth certificate in German or English, custody papers where relevant, and a consent letter from both parents with copies of their passports and UAE visas. Our Schengen visa from Dubai guide covers the shared paperwork in more depth.
Processing time and when to apply
Submit no earlier than 6 months before the trip and at least 15 days before it. A decision is normally made within 15 days, and this can be extended to up to 45 days when the application needs a closer look or more documents.
The passport stays with the consulate while the file is processed. If you need it back, send a written request to withdraw it; the passport is then returned through VFS Global within 2 working days. Only do this if the trip is off or you need the passport urgently.
Work backwards from your flight: waitlist time, then appointment, then up to 15 days of processing, with 45 days as the worst case. Do not book non-refundable hotels before the visa is in hand. If your file is missing a document, the consulate may ask for more, which can push the decision towards 45 days.
The 90/180 rule and the Entry/Exit System
The 90/180 rule is a moving window: on each day of a stay, count back 180 days, and the days spent in the Schengen area in that window must not exceed 90. The day of entry and the day of exit both count, and all Schengen countries share one allowance.
Days in the UK do not count, and neither does time spent under a residence permit or long-stay visa from a Schengen country. After 90 days in a row outside the Schengen area, a new stay of up to 90 days is possible. Run your dates through the Schengen calculator before you book, especially on a multiple-entry visa.
The EU Entry/Exit System records non-EU nationals on a short stay at the external Schengen border: passport details, fingerprints, a facial image and the date and place of each entry and exit. It started on 12 October 2025, has been fully operational since 10 April 2026, and replaces passport stamping. Registration is free and there is nothing to apply for in advance. Children under 12 do not give fingerprints, and holders of a long-stay visa or residence permit from an EES country are not registered. ETIAS is separate and applies only to visa-free visitors; it is not yet operating and is expected in the last quarter of 2026 with a fee of EUR 20. See the EES explainer for what happens at the border.
Data in Germany and topping up home
A Schengen visa gets you to the border; a data plan keeps the trip working once you land. Slashtel's Europe+ eSIM works in all 29 Schengen countries, plus the UK and Turkey, so data keeps working when you cross a border.
The eSIM is data only: no local phone number and no calls or SMS, though WhatsApp and other internet calls work over the data. Keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank codes, and turn off data roaming on it to avoid roaming charges. Buy online with an email address and a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay; the QR code arrives by email within minutes. Someone else can buy it and enter the traveller's email, so the code goes straight to the person who will use it. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects at the destination, so install it at home before the flight. The network is chosen automatically, more data can be added later with no new QR code, and the phone must be unlocked and eSIM compatible. If you would rather keep your prepaid home line alive for codes, mobile top-ups from the UAE are delivered in minutes to more than 100 countries. Our calls, texts and OTPs guide explains the two-SIM setup, and the data calculator sizes the plan. For country detail, see Germany.

Questions, answered
What is the Germany visa fee in Dubai?
The Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 12, paid in cash in local currency at the consulate's current exchange rate. VFS Global charges its own service fee on top, and that fee is kept by VFS Global.
How do I book a German visa appointment in Dubai?
Register on the VFS waitlist as soon as possible, because slots go out in chronological order and demand is high. When a slot is offered, the notification is only valid for 24 hours, so act quickly and book under the right category, Short Stay or Business.
Where do Abu Dhabi residents apply for a Germany Schengen visa?
Residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain lodge their file at VFS Global in Abu Dhabi. All German visa applications in the UAE are still processed and decided by the German Consulate General in Dubai, which works only with VFS Global.
What Germany visa documents do UAE residents need?
A passport issued within the last 10 years with two free pages, two biometric photos 3.5 x 4.5 cm, a UAE residence permit valid at least three months beyond the visa or trip, travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 cover, hotel and flight bookings, three months of bank statements and an employer letter with salary, leave dates and purpose of travel.
Is credit card travel insurance accepted for a German visa?
No. Credit card insurance is not accepted, and the cover conditions must appear on the policy itself or in a separate confirmation letter. The policy must cover emergency medical care, hospital treatment and repatriation in all Schengen countries for the whole stay, with at least EUR 30,000 cover.
How long does a Germany visa take from the UAE?
A decision is normally made within 15 days, and this can be extended to up to 45 days when the file needs a closer look or more documents. Apply no earlier than 6 months before travel and at least 15 days before it.
Can I get my passport back during processing?
Yes, by sending a written request to withdraw it. The passport is then returned through VFS Global within 2 working days, but the withdrawal ends the application, so you would need to start again for the trip.
Who can skip the VFS Germany Dubai appointment?
Spouses of German or EU citizens and parents of minor German or EU citizens who live in the UAE may walk in. Everyone else must book an appointment through the VFS waitlist before lodging the file.
How does the 90/180 rule work with a German Schengen visa?
On each day of a stay, count back 180 days; the days spent in the Schengen area in that window must not exceed 90. Entry and exit days both count, and all Schengen countries share one allowance, so days in France count against your German visa.
Will my phone data work across Germany and neighbouring countries?
Slashtel's Europe+ eSIM works in all 29 Schengen countries, plus the UK and Turkey, so data keeps working when you cross a border. It is data only, with no number and no calls or SMS, so keep your home SIM in the phone for bank codes and turn off its data roaming.
