Guatemala Independence Day falls on 15 September, marking the 1821 Act of Independence of Central America. In Guatemala City the antorcha torch runs and a parade from the National Palace are the visible centre of the day, with Antigua and other departments holding their own events. Visitors need mobile data for maps, messages and internet calls, and a Guatemala eSIM covers that.

Guatemala Independence Day: the date and what it marks

Guatemala Independence Day is celebrated on 15 September. It marks the Act of Independence of Central America, also known as the Act of Independence of Guatemala, enacted by the Provincial Council of the Province of Guatemala on 15 September 1821. The next Independence Day in Guatemala falls on Wednesday 15 September 2027.

The date is fixed, not a moveable holiday, so the day itself is 15 September each year. The public build-up starts earlier in September, with the torch relay and school and neighbourhood events running into the middle of the month.

If you are planning a trip around the date, check the official Guatemalan government and tourism sites for the year's programme, since the specific routes, lighting points and parade timings are announced closer to the day.

How the day is celebrated

The most visible part of Guatemalan independence celebrations is the torch relay, the antorcha, run by school groups and neighbourhood teams. On 14 September 2023 torch runs set off from the Obelisco in zone 10 of Guatemala City, with running groups travelling on foot to departments across the country.

Traffic authorities expected at least 1,300 torches to pass through Guatemala City on 14 September 2023, carried by classmates, workmates, friends and neighbours. The Antorcha Centroamericana por la Paz y la Libertad, a torch carried on to the other Central American countries, set off on 3 September 2023 from the Ministry of Education in zone 10 of the capital.

Arrangements change from year to year. In 2026 the Obelisco was not a torch-lighting point; Guatemala City used five designated lighting points open from 6am to 6pm on 14 September. On 15 September 2023 a parade ran from the National Palace in zone 1 to the football stadium in zone 5 of Guatemala City.

Practical points for visitors:

Food on the day

Eight Guatemalan foods are recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation: pepián, fiambre, jocón, kak'ik, plátanos en mole, pinol, Mixco chocolate and chojín. These are the dishes most associated with Guatemalan celebrations, and September is a good month to find them.

Pepián is one of Guatemala's traditional recados and is typically eaten with rice, vegetables and tortillas. Jocón combines a green sauce with chicken and is one of the dishes declared part of Guatemala's cultural heritage. Kak'ik is a Mayan soup of pre-Hispanic origin from the Q'eqchi' region; its name refers to red and chilli.

Where to look:

Celebrating from abroad

Guatemalans abroad mark 15 September with their own events. Guatemalan migrants held the first Guatemala Independence Day parade in Los Angeles on 4 September 2021, for the bicentenary, with more than 20 migrant organisations from southern California taking part.

If you are outside Guatemala, the day usually combines a community parade or gathering with food at home and calls to family. Community organisations in your city are the usual place to find out what is planned locally; the official site will confirm any national programme broadcast for the date.

Visiting Guatemala for the day: staying connected

For a September visit, a Slashtel Guatemala eSIM gives you data for maps, messages and internet calls. It is data only, with no local phone number and no calls or SMS, so keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and bank codes and turn off data roaming on it.

Before you go:

Where to stay: in Guatemala City, zones 10, 4 and 1 are the usual areas for visitors, with zone 10 closest to the Obelisco and the Ministry of Education. Antigua is the other common base for the holiday period. Book early, as the days around 14 and 15 September are busy.

Entry rules depend on your nationality and are not decided here; check the official Guatemalan immigration site for your route before booking. See the Guatemala destination page for plan options and the data calculator to size your plan. If you plan to use your home number for bank codes while travelling, read calls, texts, OTPs and data on eSIM. Support is on WhatsApp and email if anything needs sorting.
