Going home to see family in Sri Lanka?

The eSIM gives you data from landing and leaves your own SIM in place, so your usual number still gets calls, SMS and bank codes. While you plan the trip, you can also top up family numbers in Sri Lanka and watch fares home.

If you are flying from the UK to see family in Colombo or Galle, you do not want to land and hunt for a SIM card. You want data on your phone before you leave, and you want it to work the moment you switch off airplane mode. A Sri Lanka eSIM does exactly that.

If you are an India-origin traveller, you may also be keeping an Indian SIM active for bank OTPs. Your Sri Lanka eSIM handles data; your Indian SIM handles the OTPs. No swapping cards, no roaming bills.

How much data for this trip

The right amount depends on how long you stay and what you do.

Trip length What you do Plan
3-4 days Maps, WhatsApp, occasional social media 1GB
5-7 days Maps, WhatsApp video calls, some streaming 3GB
7-10 days Streaming, video calls, remote work 5GB
2+ weeks Heavy use, hotspot for laptop 10GB+

Our Sri Lanka plans start from $3.49. You choose the size, pay once, and data starts when you connect to a local network at the destination.

Two practical notes

Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport: Free Wi-Fi exists but is slow and requires an OTP to your home number. If you have not installed your eSIM before landing, you will be stuck with that slow Wi-Fi or a roaming data charge. Install at home on Wi-Fi. It takes two minutes.

Hotspot and local apps: You can hotspot from your Sri Lanka eSIM, useful for a laptop. Some local services (like railway booking sites) may prefer a Sri Lankan IP or payment method, but your eSIM works for general browsing and apps like Uber or PickMe without issues.

Install before you fly

Your eSIM arrives as a QR code by email within a minute of purchase. Install it on Wi-Fi before you travel. Data starts on first connection at the destination. No contracts, no hidden fees.

Follow our installation guide for iPhone and Android if you need step-by-step help.

Keep your home SIM for OTPs

If you hold an Indian SIM, keep it active for bank alerts and OTPs. You can recharge your Indian number from abroad, Airtel, Jio, Vi and BSNL are all covered. Your Sri Lanka eSIM handles data; your Indian SIM handles the messages.

If you are a UK resident, your home SIM can stay in the phone on roaming for calls, just switch data to the eSIM.

Questions, answered

Can I use an eSIM in Sri Lanka?

Yes. If your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM (iPhone XS or newer, most recent Android flagships), you can install a Sri Lanka eSIM before you travel. Data starts when you connect to a local network on arrival.

How much data do I need for a week in Sri Lanka?

For a 7-day trip, 5GB is usually enough if you use maps, WhatsApp and occasional social media. If you plan to stream video or work remotely, go for 10GB. For a longer stay of two weeks or more, consider 20GB.

Is the Sri Lanka eSIM cheaper than buying a local SIM at the airport?

Usually yes, or at least comparable. A local SIM at Bandaranaike International Airport costs around $15-$20 for similar data. Our Sri Lanka plans start from $3.49 and you avoid the queue at the airport kiosk.

Will my UK or Indian number still work in Sri Lanka?

Your home SIM will work on roaming, but you will pay roaming rates. Keep it enabled for OTPs and bank alerts, but switch data to the eSIM to avoid high data roaming charges.

Can I hotspot from my Sri Lanka eSIM?

Yes. You can use your Sri Lanka eSIM as a hotspot for a laptop or tablet. Check your phone's hotspot settings once you have connected to the local network.

What happens if I run out of data in Sri Lanka?

You can buy a new eSIM or top up if available. For longer trips, consider buying a larger plan upfront, it works out cheaper than buying multiple smaller ones.

What is the best eSIM for Sri Lanka?

For most trips a 5GB to 10GB data eSIM valid for 30 days is the right size: Slashtel's 5GB plan for Sri Lanka is $7.99 on Hutch, Dialog and SLT-Mobitel. Install it before you fly, keep your home SIM on for calls and bank texts, and top up the same eSIM if you run low.

How much does an eSIM for Sri Lanka cost for a week?

From $3.49 for 1GB valid 7 days, as of 7 November 2026. Longer trips: two weeks from $5.89 (3GB), one month from $5.89 (3GB).

What is the cheapest data per GB for Sri Lanka?

$1.32 per GB on the 20GB plan (30 days, $26.39). Bigger plans usually cost less per GB, so buy the size you expect to use.

Which networks does a Sri Lanka eSIM use?

Hutch, Dialog and SLT-Mobitel, with speeds up to 5G where available. The eSIM picks the strongest network automatically.

Does the Sri Lanka eSIM include a phone number?

No. Slashtel eSIMs are data only, with no local number, calls or SMS. WhatsApp and other internet calls work, and your home SIM can stay on for calls and OTP texts.

When does the Sri Lanka eSIM start counting days?

Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in Sri Lanka, not when you buy it, so you can buy and install it before you travel.

What currency is used in Sri Lanka?

The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR).
